Food for People

Coffee grows where people have to get by on far less than we do. We give something back.

Why we do this

Pleasure here, harvest there

Coffee is drunk in the wealthy countries. We celebrate making espresso with expensive portafilter machines and fine accessories, spend a lot of money on the best beans and filter our water elaborately — all for the greatest possible pleasure for us and for those we love.

In doing so we sometimes forget that the countries where our beans grow are far less wealthy — and that the people who harvest those beans have to get by on far less than we do.

That is why we want to give something back to the world through what we do at omaneo. We deliberately do not spread this commitment thin; we have chosen one project we can stand behind completely.

Where our coffee comes from

Grown near the equator, drunk far away

Almost all of the world's green coffee grows around the equator — in countries considerably poorer than the ones where it is later drunk. A small circle of countries brings in most of the harvest:

Brasilien 38 %
Vietnam 16 %
Kolumbien 9 %
Indonesien 7 %
Äthiopien 4 %
Honduras 4 %
Indien 3 %

Share of the world green-coffee harvest, rounded.

5–10 %

That is how little of the shop price of a coffee reaches the people who grow it, on average. Most of the value is created only after export — in roasting, trade and retail, that is, with us in the wealthy countries.

We will not undo this inequality on our own. But it reminds us daily which world our coffee comes from — and that we stand on the favoured side. That is exactly why we support Food for People, starting today.

Our project

“Food for People” — food for all

We deliberately chose a single project we personally stand behind: “Food for People” of the Prem Rawat Foundation. What decided it was not the prettiest story but trust — we know the people behind it and we know that the help arrives. The idea is as simple as it is effective: where children and families reliably receive a full meal, clean water and the chance of an education, the cycle of poverty can be broken.

And it rarely stops at the meal. Someone who is fed and healthy can go to school, learn and later work. Step by step whole villages change — and again and again it is children who are the first in their family to finish school and then go on to study.
